Grown for its gorgeous burgundy leaves which emerge
in spring and remain deep-burgundy all summer - Perfect as a
small-growing specimen tree next to the deck or patio.
While very similar to 'Bloodgood', there are several differences:
1. 'Emperor I' leafs out in spring about two weeks later than
'Bloodgood' (a good thing if we have a late freeze).
2. 'Emperor I' seems to hold its deep-burgundy leaf color
in the heat of summer better than 'Bloodgood'.
'Emperor I' has blackish-red bark with maturity and its leaves turn
brilliant scarlet-red in fall, before dropping for winter. 'Emperor I'
may be planted in ALL-DAY summer sun if given supplemental water
during dry weather.
In our area, 'Emperor I' matures at about 15' tall and wide.
Expect 8-10" growth a year.
Plant in a sun to light shade. |
